On April 8, 2025, at the Department of Foreign Philology, a guest lecture by translator Svitlana Orlova on “Interdisciplinary Aspects of Translation and Practical Advice on Organizing Translation Activities” was held for students specializing in Philology. Svitlana Orlova, an experienced translator of literary works for both children and adults, with over twenty years of collaboration with publishers such as “Ranok,” “Fabula,” and “Vivat,” shared her experience in working with fictional texts.
Ms. Orlova highlighted aspects of translation work such as adhering to stylistic norms, finding equivalent synonyms, and the intricacies of translating metaphors and idiomatic expressions. She also shared professional insights with students, including balancing simplification of language while preserving content, the specifics of working with professional dictionaries, and note-taking techniques during the translation of literary works. Special attention was given to the importance of reading, broadening one’s worldview, and cultivating general erudition as essential components of professional preparation for future translators.
